Indian-American Raj Iyer becomes the US Army’s first Chief Information Officer.

  • Indian-American Dr. Raj Iyer has taken over as the first Chief Information Officer at the US Army, after the Pentagon created the position in July 2020.
  • One of the highest-ranking Indian-American civilians in the US Department of Defense, Iyer, who holds a Ph. D. in Electrical Engineering, serves as the principal advisor to the Secretary of the Army and directs representation of the secretary in matters relating to information management/Information Technology (IT).
  • Iyer will supervise an annual budget of USD 16 billion for the US Army’s IT operations. Over 15,000 civilians and military personnel posted across 100 countries work under him.
  • Iyer will direct the execution of policies and programs to modernize the US Army to achieve digital overmatch against near-peer adversaries such as China and Russia.
  • Iyer was a partner and managing director at Deloitte Consulting LLP, where he led multiple technology programs supporting government clients.
  • He has established new organizations, including the first office of the Chief Technology Officer in the Army, co-founded a successful technology start-up, and led recovery programs such as Obamacare.
  • He also holds a patent and has published dozens of peer-reviewed papers.
  • Iyer holds a Ph. D. from the University of Texas at Arlington along with multiple master’s degrees, including a Master of Business Administration from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from The University of Texas at Arlington.

Morocco approves the use of AstraZeneca-Oxford University’s Covid-19 vaccine.

Important Points To Remember:

  • Morocco has approved the emergency use of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine, jointly developed with the U.K.’s Oxford University.
  • The country’s Health Ministry added that the Serum Institute of India is under contract from AstraZeneca to make the shots.
  • According to the authorization documents, the AstraZeneca vaccine would be administered in two doses with an interval of between four and 12 weeks.
  • The immunization plan aims to vaccinate 80% of the population, including frontline workers and people suffering from chronic diseases.

Bureau of Indian Standards celebrates the 74th foundation day on 6th January 2021.

Important Points To Remember:

  • The Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Commerce & Industry, and Railways Shri Piyush Goyal attended the 74th foundation day celebration of the Bureau of Indian Standards on 6th January 2021. 
  • On this occasion, he inaugurated the Toy Testing facilities, which BIS has created across three of its laboratories, and announced the launch of Certificate Courses on Assaying & Hallmarking as well as Quality Control.
  • While lauding BIS for its state-of-the-art facilities, Shri Goyal stated that the facilities have been created at the most appropriate time as the Government has recently brought “Toys” under mandatory BIS certification.
  • The test facilities will act as an enabler for about over 5000 industrial units, including micro & small ones for implementing the standards.  He added this industry would be able to compete with foreign manufacturers and prevent the influx of imported toys, which are of substandard quality. This step will also take care of the concerns regarding the safety of toys and possible detrimental effects on the health of children.

PM Modi inaugurated New Rewari – New Madar Section of Western Dedicated Freight Corridor.

Important Points To Remember:

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated to the nation the 306 Kilometer New Rewari – New Madar Section of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor today.
  •  He also flags off the world’s first Double Stack Long Haul 1.5 Kilometer long Container Train hauled by electric traction from New Ateli -New Kishangarh during the event.
  •  Governors and Chief Ministers of Rajasthan and Haryana along with Railway Minister Piyush Goyal are present at the occasion.
  •  The New Rewari – New Madar section of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor is situated in Haryana and Rajasthan. It consists of nine newly built dedicated freight corridor stations which include three junction stations in New Rewari, New Ateli, and New Phulera.
  •  The opening of this stretch will benefit various industries in Rewari – Manesar, Narnaul, Phulera, and Kishangarh areas of Rajasthan and Haryana and will also enable better usage of the container depot of CONCOR at Kathuwas. This section will also ensure seamless connectivity with the western ports of Kandla, Pipavav, Mundhra, and Dahej situated in Gujarat.
  • With the inauguration of this section, seamless connectivity between the Western and Eastern dedicated freight corridors will be achieved. The Prime Minister had on 29th of last month dedicated to the nation, the 351-kilometer New Bhaupur- New Khurja section of the Eastern freight corridor.
  •  These freight trains will run at the maximum speed of 100 km/per hour as against the current maximum speed of 75 km/per hour on the Indian Railway tracks. It has also been decided that the average speed of freight trains will be increased from the existing speed of 26 km/per hour on Indian Railway lines to 70 km/per hour on the dedicated freight.

  • Union Education Minister Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ on 7th January inaugurated the two-day Virtual International Akhand Conference ‘EDUCON 2020’ through video conferencing.
  • This two-day International Conference is being organized by the Central University of Punjab, Bathinda (CUPB) in collaboration with the Global Educational Research Association (GERA) under the patronage of Prof. (Dr.) Raghavendra P. Tiwari, Vice-Chancellor, CUPB & Padma Shri Dr. MahendraSodha (Patron, GERA).
  • The focal theme of EDUCON-2020 is Envisioning Education for Transforming Youth to Restore Global Peace.

26th Kolkata International Film Festival to begin from 8th January.

Important Points To Remember:

  • The 26th Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF) will begin on 8th January.
  • In view of the present pandemic situation, this year, the week-long event will be held virtually on a smaller scale. Bollywood star Shahrukh Khan is supposed to attend the inaugural event virtually.  
  •  81 feature films along with 50 short and documentary films from 45 countries will be screened at eight venues this year. A special tribute will be paid to late dignitaries like Soumitra Chattopadhyay, Rishi Kapoor, Irfan Khan, Kim Ki Duk, and Fernando Solanas.
  • The 26th edition of KIFF was to take place from 5th to 12th November last year, but it was rescheduled for 8th to 15th January due to COVID-19.

NHAI launched the first government-sponsored InvIT.

Important Points To Remember:

  • India’s first government-sponsored Infrastructure Investment Trust (InvIT) could be operationalized by March.
  • Around six road assets worth Rs 5,000 crore have been given in-principle approval for transfer to the InvIT, the official said.
  • “There are five to six projects which are operational, and we have a good revenue stream, which will be transferred to the InvIT.”
  • The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), which received approval from the Union cabinet to float the InvIT in December 2019, is in the process of legal vetting of the financing instrument.
  • NHAI has been actively working on setting up an InvIT to monetize its completed and operational national highways projects with the objective of mobilizing additional resources through capital markets.
  • InvITs are popular among investors of long-term revenue-generating assets like toll roads and power-transmission projects.
  • NHAI has appointed veteran banker B Sriram as the chairman of its investment manager company National Highways Infra Investment Managers Pvt Ltd (NHIIMPL). Sriram was earlier managing director of IDBI Bank Ltd and managing director at State Bank of India (SBI).

NALCO to invest around Rs 30,000 cr on the company’s expansion & diversification plans.

Important Points To Remember:

  • Union Minister for Coal & Mines Pralhad Joshi announced that the  National Aluminium Company Limited, NALCO, will invest around 30,000 crore rupees by the financial year 2027-28 on the company’s expansion and diversification plans.
  • He was addressing the 41st Foundation Day of NALCO in the capital Bhubaneswar in Odisha.
  • The ambitious growth plans of NALCO will have a multiplier effect in the production and consumption of aluminum thereby achieving Atmanirbhar Bharat’s vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  •  The Central Government is extending all-round support to the mineral-rich state Odisha to avoid any interruption in the mineral production of the country.
  • The NALCO, in association with the Govt. of Odisha, is setting up a world-class Aluminium Park in Angul to encourage the development of downstream and ancillary industries in the state which would enhance employment generation and boost local entrepreneurship.
  • The company that is currently operational in the tribal-dominated district of Koraput and Angul in Odisha, contributes 32 percent Bauxite, 33 percent Aluminia, and 12 percent Aluminium production in the country.

IAF signs MoU with IDSR for officers to undertake doctoral research.

  • Indian Air Force and Institute of Defence Studies and Research – IDSR- an autonomous Institution of Gujarat University have signed a Memorandum of Understanding.
  • This will enable the Officers of IAF to undertake Doctoral Research, Post-Graduate Programme, and Post Graduate Diploma. These courses will cover various areas of interest that include Defence Studies, Defence Management, National Security, Aerospace & Aviation Science and other areas of Defence Technology.
  • The event was chaired by Air Officer-in-Charge Personnel, Air Marshal R.J. Duckworth in virtual mode.
  • The MoU was signed by Air Vice-Marshal Rajeev Sharma-  Assistant Chief of Air Staff (Education) and Ms. Anju Sharma, Principal Secretary of Higher & Technical Education of Gujarat Government and Chairperson- IDSR.

Former Minister K.K. Ramachandran passed away.

Important Points To Remember:

  • A senior leader of the Congress party and former minister of the state K.K. Ramachandran (78) passed away at a private hospital in Kozhikode. He suffered a massive heart attack.
  • Ramachandran was ailing for some time and was leading a retired life at his residence in Kakkodi, Kozhikode.
  • Popularly known as Ramachandran Master, the Congress leader had represented the party as an MLA six times – three times from Kalpetta and thrice from Sultan Bathery Assembly constituency.
  • A native of Koothuparamba in Kannur district, Ramachandran Master entered active politics after quitting his job as a teacher in 1980.
  • He was secretary of the Kozhikode District Congress Committee.
  • He was Minister for Food & Civil Supplies in the A K Antony Ministry from 1995 and Health Minister in the Oommen Chandy Ministry from 20.

State News

Karnataka CM launched Krishi Sanjeevani vans to test soil, water & suggest remedies for pest control.

Important Points To Remember:

  • Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa launched Krishi Sanjeevani vans in Bengaluru today. The 40 vans flagged off today will reach out to the agriculture fields to test soil, water and suggest remedies for pest control to improve yield.
  • The  Chief Minister said that in the future the Agriculture Department has proposed to attach one such van for every Farmers Assistance center in the districts.
  • Agriculture Department has launched Krishi Sanjeevani vans to take labs to the fields so that farmers get find hand support in their farming techniques.
  •  Depending on the soil, water, and pests inflicting the crops, the Agriculture Department personnel can suggest remedies. The vans will reach the agriculture fields, study the conditions, and address the needs of the farmers about pest control, the fertility of the soil, weeds, and suitable crops in the existing conditions. The department has received Central assistance under National Krishi Vikas Yojana to take up this novel program.

Telangana becomes 3rd State in the country to successfully undertake Dept. of Expenditure stipulated ULB reform.

Important Points To Remember:

  • Telangana has become the 3rd State in the country to successfully undertake Urban Local Bodies, ULB reform stipulated by the Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance.
  • The State has become eligible to mobilize additional financial resources of Rs 2,508 crore through Open Market Borrowings. Permission for the same was issued by the Department of Expenditure today. 
  • Telangana has now joined the two other States Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, who have completed this reform. On completion of urban local bodies reform, these three States have been granted additional borrowing permission of Rs 7,406 crore.
  •  Reforms in the urban local bodies and the urban utilities are aimed at financial strengthening of ULBs in the State and to enable them to provide better public health and sanitation services. Economically rejuvenated ULBs will also be able to create good civic infrastructure.
  • The reforms stipulated to achieve these objectives are, the State will notify floor rates of property tax in ULBs which are in consonance with the prevailing circle rates and floor rates of user charges in respect of the provision of water supply, drainage, and sewerage which reflect current costs/past inflation. The State will put in place a system of periodic increases in floor rates of property tax or user charges in line with price increases.

The government approved the Central Sector Scheme for Industrial Development of Jammu & Kashmir.

Important Points To Remember:

  • The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi considered and approved the proposal of the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade for Central Sector Scheme for Industrial Development of Jammu & Kashmir.
  • The scheme is approved with a total outlay of Rs. 28,400 crore up to the year 2037.
  • The government of India has formulated the New Industrial Development Scheme for Jammu & Kashmir (J&K IDS, 2021) as a Central Sector Scheme for the development of Industries in the UT of Jammu & Kashmir.
  • The main purpose of the scheme is to generate employment which directly leads to the socio-economic development of the area. Considering the historic development of reorganization of Jammu & Kashmir with effect from 31.10.2019 into UT of Jammu & Kashmir under the J&K Reorganisation Act, 2019, the present scheme is being implemented with the vision that industry and service-led development of J&K needs to be given a fresh thrust with emphasis on job creation, skill development, and sustainable development by attracting new investment and nurturing the existing ones.

Jammu & Kashmir announces Rs 28,400 cr mega Industrial Development Package.

Important Points To Remember:

  • In the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha announced the Government of India’s approval for a mega Industrial Development Package worth 28,400 crore rupees.
  • The LG Sinha the Union Cabinet sanctioned the huge Industrial Development Package-2021 for J&K’s industrial sector that has been craving for strong support from the Centre.
  • The package aims at providing a huge boost to the existing industrial sector, setting up new units, creating 4.5 lakh jobs, and at least investments of 20,000 crore rupees. The package will remain in force for 17 years i.e. till 2037.
  • With the announcement of the new industrial package, the Government of India has once again shown its commitment towards sowing the seeds of growth, prosperity, and employment.
  • The LG stated that the administration led by him was working on a long and short-term strategy for streamlining the power infrastructure in J&K and the Union Territory has earned the first slot on the road connectivity front and in the near future, every village will be connected through a better road.
  •  In 2023, the people of J&K will travel in the metro for the first time. He also said that a committee is examining the restoration of 4-G internet services in the remaining 18 districts of the Union Territory and there will be good news soon in the coming days.
