JK Maheshwari appointed as the Chief Justice of Sikkim High Court.

Important Points To Remember:

  • Chief Justice Jitendra Kumar Maheshwari, who was heading the Andhra Pradesh High Court has now been appointed the Chief Justice of the Sikkim High Court.
  • Justice Maheshwari enrolled as an advocate on November 22, 1985, and practiced in the HC of MP at Gwalior. He was appointed a judge of the MP HC on November 25, 2005. 

AK Goswami appointed as the Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court.

Important Points To Remember:

  • Chief Justice Arup Kumar Goswami of the Sikkim High Court has now been transferred for appointment as the Andhra Pradesh High Court’s Chief Justice.
  • Andhra Pradesh governor Biswabhusan Harichandan administered the oath of office to Justice Goswami in Vijayawada.

Shiv Bose is the new General Manager of Sheraton Grand Chennai Resort & Spa.

Important Points To Remember:

  • Hospitality service provider Sheraton Grand Chennai Resort and Spa, run by the US-based Marriott International, announced the appointment of Shiv Bose as its general manager.
  • With almost two decades of experience in the hospitality industry, Bose would be spearheading the team and developing the hotel’s operations.
  • Bose had served Courtyard by Marriott Bengaluru Hebbal and Le Meridien Nagpur as general manager.
  • Marriott International has more than 7,500 properties under 30 leading brands across 132 countries.

Banking News

Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh have become the first group of States to complete three out of the four citizen-centric reforms.

Important Points To Remember:

  • Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh have become the first group of States to complete three out of the four citizen-centric reforms stipulated by the Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance.
  • The two States have completed the One Nation, One Ration Card Reforms, Ease of Doing Business Reforms, and Urban Local Bodies Reforms.
  • With the completion of reforms in the three sectors, the Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance has decided to provide additional financial assistance amounting to Rs.1004 crore to these States under the newly launched Scheme of “Special Assistance to States for Capital Expenditure”.
  • Andhra Pradesh will get an additional amount of Rs.344 crore while Madhya Pradesh has become entitled to receive Rs.660 crore for capital projects.
  • The Scheme was announced by the Finance Minister on 12th October 2020 as part of the Aatma Nirbhar Bharat package.

Cabinet Decisions Today

Cabinet approves signing of Memorandum of Cooperation between India and Japan on Partnership in “Specified Skilled Worker”.

Important Points To Remember:

  • The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi,  has approved the signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation between the Government of India and Government of Japan, on a Basic Framework for Partnership for Proper Operation of the System Pertaining to “Specified Skilled Worker”.
  • The present Memorandum of Cooperation would set an institutional mechanism for partnership and cooperation between India and Japan on sending and accepting skilled Indian workers, who have qualified the required skill and Japanese language test, to work in fourteen specified sectors in Japan.
  • The Indian workers would be granted a new status of residence of “Specified Skilled Worker” by the Government of Japan.
  • Under this MOC, a Joint Working Group will be set up to follow up on the implementation of this MOC.
  • The Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) would enhance people-to-people contacts, foster mobility of workers and skilled professionals from India to Japan.

ICAR-CPCRI celebrates 105th foundation day.

Important Points To Remember:

  • Rajmohan Unnithan, MP has inaugurated the 105th Foundation Day celebrations and Farmers’.
  • The newly designed coconut sap chiller, costing ₹800, was released by Mr. Unnithan on the occasion.
  • He also distributed critical inputs to farmers and youths from Scheduled Caste communities. Publications, including an audio CD on ‘Thengum Thanalum’ based on the Akashavani program, were also released on the occasion.
  • Kasaragod MLA N.A. Nellikunnu hailed the efforts of CPCRI scientists in inventing farmer-friendly technologies like ‘Kalparasa’.
  • Baby Balakrishnan, District Panchayat President, Kasaragod, and Dr. A.K. Singh, Deputy Director General (Horticulture Science), ICAR, New Delhi were present.
  • ICAR-CPCRI Awards 2019 were presented at the function.
  • A scientist-farmer interface, ‘Kisan Vani’ was organized in collaboration with AIR, Kannur, as part of the celebrations.

MoU & Agreement

Khadi and Village Industries Commission Signs MoU with ITBP

Important Points To Remember:

  • Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) signed an MoU with ITBP for the supply of 1.72 lakh cotton durries every year.
  • The agreement was signed by Deputy CEO KVIC and DIG, ITBP, in presence of KVIC Chairman Shri Vinai Kumar Saxena and Additional Secretary (Home) Shri Vivek Bhardwaj and other officials of CAPFs.
    The cotton durries will be produced by Khadi artisans in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Punjab.
  • On July 31 last year, KVIC had signed an agreement with ITBP for supplying Kacchi Ghani mustard oil which has been successfully supplied. The ITBP is the nodal agency appointed by MHA for the procurement of provisions on behalf of all paramilitary forces.

IAF signed an MoU with IDSR.

  • Indian Air Force and Institute of Defence Studies and Research (IDSR), an autonomous Institution of Gujarat University under the patronage of the Government of Gujarat signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 29 Dec 20.
  • The MoU will enable Officers of IAF to undertake Doctoral Research, Post-GraduateProgramme, and Post Graduate Diploma covering various areas of interest that include Defence Studies, Defence Management, National Security, Aerospace &Aviation Science, and other areas of Defence Technology.
  • The event held on a virtual platform was chaired by Air Officer-in-Charge Personnel, Air Marshal RJ Duckworth VSM.
  • MoU was signed by Air Vice-Marshal RajeevSharma, Assistant Chief of Air Staff (Education), and Ms. Anju Sharma, IAS, PrincipalSecretary (Higher & Technical Education) to the Government of Gujarat and Chairperson-IDSR.
  • Prof Himanshu A Pandya, Vice-Chancellor of Gujarat University, and Director-General IDSR were also present on the occasion.
  • Akashdeep, Indian Air Force has entered into such partnership with various prestigious Academias to promote research by Officers and create a pool of think tanks with strategic knowledge and intellectual skills.

Uttar Pradesh launched Kisan Kalyan Mission to double farmers’ income.

Important Points To Remember:

  • Uttar Pradesh government launched a special program named Kisan Kalyan Mission for farmer welfare and to double the farmer’s income of the state.
  • Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will launch the Kishan Kalyan Mission from Sarojininagar development block of state capital Lucknow. 
  • AIR Correspondent reports that a 3 week-long campaign will be organized in every development block of all 75 districts.

Obituaries News

Sahitya Akademi winner A. Madhavan passes away.

Important Points To Remember:

  • Tamil writer A. Madhavan, who won the Sahitya Akademi award in 2015, died in Thiruvananthapuram. He was 87 and is survived by two daughters.
  • Though he spent his entire life in Thiruvananthapuram and studied Malayalam in school, Mr. Madhavan came under the influence of the Dravidian movement and his stories were published in the Pongal special issues of magazines run by leaders of the movement.
  • Mr. Madhavan was attracted to the social reformist ideas of the Dravidian movement.
  • He was a voracious reader even though he had to quit school because of his family’s financial condition and was forced to work in a shop.
  • Mr. Madhavan ran a small shop, Selvi Stores, in Salai in Thiruvananthapuram and the life incidents played out on the street found expression in his writings.
  • He translated Malayalam writer P.K. Balakrishnan’s Ini Njan Urangatte, the story of Karna through the eyes of Draupadi, in Tamil as Ini Naan Urankattum and was published by the Sahitya Akademi. The Sahitya Akademi conferred the award for his collected prose writings Ilakkiya Chuvadukal.
  • His novel Punalum Manalum was translated into English as On A River’s Bank.

Former MLA Motakpalli passes away.

Important Points To Remember:

  • The former MLA from Sedam Assembly constituency Basavantreddy Patil Motakpalli died after a prolonged illness at his residence in Motakpalli of Sedam taluk in Kalaburagi district. He was 88.
  • He joined politics in 1978 and became a Zilla panchayat member in 1988. A two-term legislator, Motakpalli contested his first Assembly election in 1989. He also won on Congress ticket in 1999. He had lost in 1994.
  • The leader ended his association with the Congress and joined the BJP 10 years ago. He was closely associated with the former Chief Minister S.M. Krishna.
  • Mr. Motakpalli is survived by his son, daughter and six grandchildren.
  • The last rites of the leader were performed in his native village of Motakpalli.

Bob Brett, a tennis coach passes away. 

Important Points To Remember:

  • Bob Brett, a tennis coach whose players included Grand Slam champions Boris Becker, Goran Ivanisevic, and Marin Cilic, has died. Bob guided all levels of players to success from Grand Slam champions to those starting out in the sport he loved so dearly.
  • Brett received the ATPs Tim Gullickson Career Coach award in November.
  • Bob Brett, a tennis coach whose players included Grand Slam champions Boris Becker, Goran Ivanisevic,  Marin Cilic, has died. He was 67. He had been battling cancer.
  • Brett coached for national tennis associations in Britain, Japan and Canada.
  • He also opened a private tennis academy in San Romeo Italy.
  • Brett coached Becker from November 1987 to February 1991, a span that included three of the German’s six career major titles and a rise to No. 1 in the ATP rankings.
