Justice Vineet Kothari takes oath as Gujarat HC Judge.

  • Justice Vineet Kothari took oath as a Judge in Gujarat High Court.
  • He was previously an Acting Chief Justice in Madras High Court. He was transferred to Gujarat High Court on the recommendation of a five Judge collegium led by the Chief Justice of India.
  • He was elevated as a judge of the Rajasthan High Court in 2005 and was transferred to Karnataka in 2016.
  • He had assumed charge as the senior-most judge of the Madras High Court on 23rd November 2018 and had served as its Additional Chief Justice immediately after former Chief Justice Vijaya Kamlesh Tahilramani resigned in September 2019.
  • He replaced Chief Justice Amreshwar Pratap Sahi.

Bangladesh approved the Oxford University-AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine.

Important Points To Remember:

  • The government of Bangladesh has granted approval for the emergency use of the Oxford University-AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine.
  • The approval to import the vaccine was granted by Bangladesh to Beximco Pharmaceuticals Ltd. (BPL).
  • The BPL has signed an agreement with the Serum Institute of India (SII) for importing 30 million shots of the vaccine for Bangladesh on December 13.

DRDO Signed MOU with MAHA-METRO for implementation of Advanced Biodigester Mk-II Technology in Metro Rail Network.

Important Points To Remember:

  • Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Government of India’s premier research agency, and Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (MAHA –METRO), a joint venture company of the GoI and Government of Maharashtra are working together to conserve water and protect the environment by installing DRDO’s eco-friendly biodigester units (a non-sewered sanitation technology) in its facilities.
  • A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was inked on January 5, 2021, between MAHA-METRO and DRDO through which DRDO will render technical support for the implementation of its advanced biodigester Mk-II technology for the treatment of human waste (night soil) in the metro rail network.
  • Dr. AK Singh, Distinguished Scientist & Director General- Life Sciences, DRDO Headquarters, New Delhi, and Dr. Brijesh Dixit, Managing Director, Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) exchanged the MoU on behalf of their organizations.
  • The MoU was signed by Dr. DK Dubey, Director DRDE, Gwalior, and Sh. Atul Gadgil, Director, Maha-Metro Rail Corporation Limited, Pune.
  • DRDO’s biodigester is an indigenous, green, and cost-effective technology, with a rare distinction of having one of the largest numbers of DRDO-licensees (ToT holders).

Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan inaugurated a migrant worker cell in Surat.

  • The migrant workers’ cell with linkage with the city livelihood center will help extend all kinds of assistance and government-led benefits to them.

Supreme Court has given approval for the construction of a new Central Vista project in Delhi.

  • The Supreme Court, in a majority verdict, gave its approval for the construction of the new Central Vista project in the National Capital.
  • In its judgment, the Apex court said the exercise of the power under the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) Act was valid and the recommendations of environmental clearance by the Ministry of Environment proper.
  • The three-judge bench hearing the case comprised Justices Dinesh Maheshwar, A. M. Khanwilkar, and Sanjiv Khanna.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone and performed Bhumi Pujan for the construction of the new Parliament building, which is a part of the 20,000 crores rupees Central Vista project.

PM inaugurated natural gas pipeline between Kochi and Mangaluru.

Important Points To Remember:

  • Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the Kochi-Mangaluru natural gas pipeline.
  • The event will mark an important milestone towards the creation of ‘One Nation One Gas Grid’.
  • The 450 km long pipeline has been built by GAIL (India) Ltd.
  • It has a transportation capacity of 12 Million Metric Standard Cubic Metres per day and will carry natural gas from the Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) Regasification Terminal at Kochi (Kerala) to Mangaluru (Dakshina Kannada district, Karnataka), while passing through Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod districts.
  • The total cost of the project was about Rs 3000 crore and its construction created over 12 lakh man-days of employment.
  • Laying of the pipeline was an engineering challenge as the route of the pipeline necessitated it to cross water bodies at more than 100 locations.
  • This was done through a special technique called the Horizontal Directional Drilling method.

Union Ministers Ramesh Pokhariyal & Smriti Irani launched virtual toy hackathon ‘Toycathon 2021’.

  • Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ and Union Minister for Textiles and Women & Child Development Smriti Zubin Irani today jointly launched the Toycathon 2021.
  • Toycathon is aimed to conceptualize innovative toys based on the Indian value system which will inculcate positive behavior and good value among the children.
  • Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank added that this will prove to be a milestone in the direction of Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan. He said toys can play an instrumental role in promoting the knowledge, culture, and science of the country.
  • The Toycathon will majorly focus on conceptualizing new and innovative toys using local material that is economical, affordable, safe, and environment friendly.
  • The grand finale of the event will be organized from 23rd to 25th of February of the next month.
  • There will be two categories for the Toycathon, one is for online toys and another for physical toys.

India gets its first women’s in the team in disaster combat.

  • An all-woman team of freshly trained National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel was recently deployed for contingency duties on the banks of the Ganga river in Uttar Pradesh’s Garh Mukteshwar town.
  • The first women rescuers’ team is already on the ground. The UP government requisitioned an NDRF team and the women went to Garh Mukteshwar. The team handled the rescue boats and related equipment.
  • More than 100 women personnel have joined the NDRF over the last few months and they are being deputed with its battalions across the country as soon as they finish their pre-induction course and training.

Sadhu Kothari passed away.

  • The 58-year-old veteran Yakshagana artiste, Sadhu Kothari, died following a heart attack while on stage in Shiriyara village near Kota of Udupi district.
  • Sadhu Kothari, who has been in the Yakshagana field for over 40 years, was playing the role of Maaghadha in the Yakshagana “Mahakali Maghadhendra” being staged in Kalbettu of Kaajralli of Shiriyara village.

  • Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan inaugurated one of the seven labs of the world called the centralized network lab of Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) established at Translational Health Science & Technology Institute (THSTI), Faridabad in New Delhi, through the virtual platform.
  • THSTI is an institute of the Department of Biotechnology (DBT).
  • This is the only laboratory of such kind in India and is also accredited by National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL)

  • Williamson achieved the feat in the ongoing second Test match against Pakistan at the Hagley Oval.

Gregg Clark appointed analytical coach of the Indian men’s hockey team.

  • South African Olympian Gregg Clark has been appointed as the new analytical coach of the Indian men’s hockey team till the Tokyo Olympic Games.
  • Clark, who will join the national camp this month, had coached the Indian junior men’s team in 2013-2014 when it won the Sultan of Johor Cup and also participated at the 2013 FIH Junior World Cup in New Delhi.

Madhya Pradesh rolls out the ‘Launch Pad Scheme’ to make youth self-reliant.

Important Points To Remember:

  • In Madhya Pradesh, the ‘Launch Pad Scheme’ is being started for boys and girls coming out of child care institutions and having completed 18 years of age.
  • The objective of this scheme of the Women and Child Development Department is to provide such a platform to these youth, through which they will be able to become self-reliant by continuing their education and training.
  • Under the launchpad scheme, 52 districts of the state have been divided into 5 clusters. Five divisional headquarters are being started in Indore, Sagar, Gwalior, Jabalpur, and Bhopal. 
  • An amount of Rs 6 lakh will be provided by the Women and Child Development Department for the installation of each launch pad.
