Soma Mondal appointed as SAIL chairperson.

  • Soma Mondal appointed as the chairman of Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL).
  • She was the director (commercial) of SAIL since joined in 2017.
  • A 1984-graduate in electrical engineering from the National Institute of Technology-Rourkela, Mondal started her career as a graduate engineer trainee at NALCO and rose to become a director (commercial) at NALCO.
  • She will replace Anil Kumar Chaudhary.

Arya Rajendran, India’s youngest Mayor.

Important Points to Remember:

  • Arya Rajendra, the 21-year-old was recently sworn in as the Mayor of Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, the largest urban body in Kerala.
  • Arya Rajendran, a BSc Maths second-year student at the All Saints College in Thiruvananthapuram, had won the local body election from the Mudavanmughal ward of the city corporation representing CPI(M).
  • In Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, LDF won with a majority of 53 out of the 100 seats, followed by NDA.
  • She will be the third woman, all from the CPI(M), to head the urban local government in the capital city of Kerala.

RBI launches Digital Payments Index.

Important Points to Remember:

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has constructed a composite Digital Payments Index (DPI) to capture the extent of digitization of payments across the country. This is a significant development given the sharp pick-up in digital transactions seen in the recent past.
  • These parameters are Payment Enablers, Payment Infrastructure – Demand-side factors, Payment Infrastructure – Supply-side factors, Payment Performance, and Consumer Centricity, the RBI said.
  • The RBI-DPI comprises five broad parameters that enable the measurement of deepening and penetration of digital payments in the country over different time periods.

RBI launches surveys to get inputs for monetary policy.

Important Points to Remember:

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI)announced the launch of the next round of household surveys to capture inflation expectations and consumer confidence, which provide useful inputs for its monetary policy. The central bank has been conducting these surveys regularly. 
  • Announcing the launch of the January 2021 round of the Inflation Expectations Survey of Households (IESH), it aims to capture subjective assessments on price movements and inflation from about 6,000 households based on their individual consumption baskets across 18 cities.
  • The cities include Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Chennai, Delhi, and Thiruvananthapuram.
    The Consumer Confidence Survey (CCS) seeks qualitative responses from households, regarding their sentiments on the general economic situation, employment scenario, price level, households’ income, and spending. 
  • The survey is conducted regularly across 13 cities — Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chennai, Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Patna, and Thiruvananthapuram. The survey covers about 5,400 respondents across 13 cities.

  • The 13-lakh strong Army has created a new human rights cell headed by a Major-General for “greater transparency and probity” in its functioning in disturbed areas like Jammu and Kashmir and the northeast. Major General Gautam Chauhan, who was commissioned into the Gorkha Rifles, has taken charge as the first additional director general (human rights) at the Army headquarters in New Delhi.
